Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States.

Although it’s common, accurate information about acne is scarce. This can make it challenging to get clear skin. Acne is a source of great frustration for many people because it can be a difficult condition to treat.

Why is acne so hard to treat?

Acne is hard to treat because there are multiple factors responsible for acne. Often, acne products do not address the correct factors or they aggravate skin and make the acne worse. Also, other things that you may not be aware of can trigger acne.

What causes acne in the first place?

Understanding why a pimple forms will make more sense in treating it.

Acne is a complex skin condition. It’s an imbalance of inflammation, dead skin cells, oil and p. acnes bacteria within the skin and pores. Treating acne successfully requires addressing all of the factors involved in the formation of a breakout.

Let’s look at what is involved in the formation of a breakout.

  1. Pore (technically called Follicle or Sebaceous Follicle)
  2. Oil
  3. Dead skin cells
  4. Bacteria
  5. Inflammation

Acne appears when a pore in our skin clogs. This clog begins with dead skin cells. Normally, dead skin cells rise to surface of the pore and the body sheds the cells. When the body starts to make lots of sebum (oil) the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. Instead of rising to the surface the cells become trapped inside the pore.

Sometimes bacteria that live on our skin, p. acnes, also get inside the clogged pore. Inside the pore the bacteria have a perfect environment for multiplying very quickly. With loads of bacteria inside the pore becomes inflamed (red and swollen). If the inflammation goes deep into the skin an acne cyst or nodule appears.

Acne affects people of all ages, races, and genders.

It can negatively impact a person’s self image and confidence. Not only teens suffer with acne. Many adults get acne too. Some adults will continue to get acne well into their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. It is even possible to get acne for the first time as an adult. This is called “adult-onset acne.” Acne can be particularly frustrating for adults.

Treatments that worked well during teen years can be useless or make adult acne worse.
